Moms – Is There Anything We Can’t Do?

When we first conceived of the idea for Psi Bands, we thought we were just two moms having an “a-ha moment.” Once Psi Bands actually became a reality, there were many surprises and unexpected pleasures that came along with running a business as a “mom-entrepreneur.” Probably one of the best unanticipated outcomes is being a part of this club of amazing women who have channeled their experiences and ideas as moms into a fulfilling and profitable business — often promoting a product that directly improves the well-being of others. So, we devote this issue to our fellow mom-entrepreneurs.

Are you a WAHM? Strategies for Making it Work

Many mom-entrepreneurs are WAHMs too — Work At Home Moms! Working at home when you’ve got young kids can be ideal. You can work off hours when it suits you and your family best, you can’t beat the commute, and it’s cheaper than renting office space! But, working from home also poses some challenges. Here are seven strategies we use for balancing work and home:

  1. Ask for help Whether it is from a friend, spouse, or
colleague, when you need help, ask for it. Have your girlfriends take your
children for a few hours after school (just be sure to reciprocate later). Ask
your husband to pick up the groceries. You can even ask your children for help
(like asking them to be patient while we do a work-related errand).
  2. Take time to yourselfIt
seems there is never enough time in the day to get done what we want to
accomplish, but find a way to carve out some time for yourself. It is usually
during these times that great ideas can come your way.
  3. Be flexibleEven if you are a structured,
type A personality there are times when you just need to go with the flow. Focus
on teaching yourself to not get thrown when last minute changes occur and learn
to switch gears as pleasantly as possible.
  4. Problem Solve - When
something throws you for a loop, find a solution. That can mean asking for
    help.
  5. Find humor in a situation, especially those that
    may be challenging
    It
takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. Find a reason to smile.
  6. Get on the same page as your spouseDoes
he support you in your business role? If he is not behind you 100%, why not?
What can the two of you do to get on the same page (i.e. set goals together,
discuss each others’ needs)? Are there compromises that can be made on both
sides? There’s a reason you married him, so listen because he may just have a
    point.
  7. Set boundaries for yourselfWhat
are you willing to do and not do? Stay firm to your values and communicate them
so there is mutual understanding and support.

Network Yourself to Success

If you are looking to join a female business network, there are two organizations you should know about. We have personally seen value from our involvement in these two groups:

For a Business Network for Women Entrepreneurs,
we highly recommend checking out
Savor the Success.
Networks such as this provide you with important connections, public relations opportunities, access to workshops and events and, probably most importantly, some really good solid advice from others who have been there. If you hurry, you may still have time to register for the Women Entrepreneurs Rock the World: “How I Made My First Million” in New York City on May 5 and 6.

Also, Count Me In, which runs the Make Mine a Million $ Business (M3) competition, is now accepting applications to become the next M3 Awardee. The mission of Count Me In is to promote economic independence and the growth of women owned businesses. Count Me In
for Women’s Economic Independence is the
leading national not-for-
profit provider of resources, business education and community support for women entrepreneurs seeking to grow micro businesses to million dollar enterprises. The M3 competition is designed to help women entrepreneurs strengthen their vision, build strategy, and take your business to a million dollars in revenue in the next 12-18 months. To be eligible, your business must generate at least $180,000 in annual revenues and be at least 50% woman owned. There are no fees to enter the competition. Psi Bands had the honor of being one of the winners of the M3 competition two years ago and the benefits are still paying off. You can find the M3 Competition application here.

Yak About It

Have you heard about this website? Every week Yak About It features a new product created by independent inventors and entrepreneurs. Two products go up against each other each week to determine which is the “Most Yakable.” Well, you guessed it, this week Psi Bands will be competing against another product and we could use YOUR VOTE. Please log in now and cast your vote. You also can help an inventor’s product get noticed by making a
purchase and/or sharing your thoughts in Yak Nation. Or, if you
have your own product to submit, check out the website for instructions.
