Nausea ad nauseum

Last month, we discussed how Mariah Carey lamented how morning sickness adversely affected her voice. Another diva who battled morning sickness while pregnant is Celine Dion. Her 1996 hit single “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” has a whole new meaning.

MOMPRENUER of the month: valerie lecouer and THE FANTASTIC ANTI-PLASTIC BEACH TOUR

As made clear by previous newsletters, we are all about supporting our fellow momprenuers. Valerie Lecouer,anti-plastic founder of Zoë b Organic, is one of those women who has taken the insight she has gained as a mom and applied it to a company that is making a positive impact for us all. Valerie is the inventor of the first ever biodegradable beach toys .  To promote her new line, Valerie is leading a caravan down the West Coast with her husband, their 3 young children (ages 8, 7, and 3), another mom and her 6-year-old, a French nanny, and a 5-pound Yorkie Poo named “Rambo”. Over 3 weeks, they are driving a C-Class RV from Seattle to San Diego.

Their Mission?
1. To educate people about the need for minimizing our environmental impact on our beaches.
2. To promote alternatives to the plastic that’s slowly eating away at our planet.
3. To explore the coast, have fun, and not wear shoes very often.

The Zoë b Organic beach toys are made with bioplastic derived from corn sugar and contain absolutely no BPA, phthalates, or beach toys PVC. Their bioplastic fully biodegrades in 2 to 3 years when buried in soil, immersed in water, home composted, or composted in industrial facilities. Ordinary plastic takes up to 500 years to degrade, and even then it only breaks down into tiny particles that are toxic to wildlife and the environment. Zoë b toys are durable and designed to hold up to playing just like ordinary beach toys. All completely made in the good ole USA.

recycling on the run

There are ways to be eco-aware even when you arecamper away from home.  Sometimes when we travel we tend to throw caution to the wind (“I can eat that. I’m on vacation!” or “Who cares if the kids are still up! We can all sleep in!”) And that’s fine…perhaps even healthy every once in a while. But, just because we are on vacation doesn’t mean we should get lazy about recycling. Check out Celebrate Green where blogger Lynn Cowell offers several tips for easy ways to stay green while traveling.

By the way, we have added many new retailers in recent months, so be sure to check out where to BUY on our website to find a location convenient to you!

A Non-Invasive Cure for Morning Sickness
(June 30, 2011)
Oh, terrible morning (or all-day) sickness! It feels so awful. Why won’t your doctor give you something to help? One word: thalidomide. Ever since, only the ladies with the all-day, nine-month morning sickness get any relief. If you have your garden variety first-trimester sickness, girl, you’re on your own.

Or maybe not. Believe it or not, those acupressure bands (often sold for sea sickness) really do work, on a significant number of people. The bands have nodules on them that bear down on points on your wrist. No worries about hurting the baby, and most users find that their nausea is significantly reduced (worked for me when I was pregnant!).

But traditional acupressure bands are pretty darned ugly: knit bands that look like sweat socks, or like some type of hospital bandage that will make people ask you why you’re wearing them. Psi Bands, in contrast, look like watch bands. No one will notice. No one will ask you about them. You needn’t tell them that the reason you are ill is that every single thing in the world has a smell, and it’s all bad.

OUR PICKS FOR BEACH BAG ESSENTIALS

There’s no better place to be in July than at the beach. It is a place to renew your spirit, reflect on your place in the world, watch carefree kids frolic, ride the waves and lose yourself in that book you’ve been putting off for too long. But a well-packed beach bag can be the key to getting the most out of your visit. Though life does seem to move at a slower pace in the summer, let’s remember it will be over before you can say, “pass the sunscreen.”

Here are our picks for this summer’s beach bag “must-haves”:

The BOBO Wrap — A new eco-luxe accessory, BOBO can be used to create an eco-stylish beach bag for summer. An ingenious idea, the BOBO is a sophisticated, stylish and sustainable wrapping scarf that can be used in myriad ways. The really cool part is that BOBO fabrics are made using materials that come from previous manufacturing runs. Check out the Hobo Bag Kit for the beach.

The BOBO Wrap

It may also be used as a finishing mist — a quick and soothing cool-down. Even better, the entire Om Aroma line of skin care products are free of parabens, formaldehyde, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrances.

PSI BANDS CO-FOUNDERS ARE TRAILBLAZERSAnnual Trailblazer Award from Wells Fargo

If you look closely at our beach bag list, you will notice something that all those products have in  common. They were all created by women-entrepreneurs, just like Psi Bands co-founders, Carla Falcone and Romy Taormina. Last month, our chiefs of nausea relief were honored to have received the 8th Annual Trailblazer Award from Wells Fargo and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), at NAWBO’s 2009 Women’s Business Conference in Chicago. The Award recognizes innovation, growth and community service. Visit for more information.

Launched in 2002, the NAWBO/Wells Fargo Trailblazer Award honors three women entrepreneurs for their talent, drive and entrepreneurial spirit. This year’s winners not only demonstrated those attributes, but also displayed successful development of unique product, services or delivery in their business as well as vision and commitment to building an organization that makes a difference in the community.
