The Journey

You are in your routine, driving down the road of life, in the driver’s seat, in control. Over the years you have built the path you are on and you are comfortable with it. Most days are quite predictable and this is reassuring. Certainly,there are some twists and turns along the way, but you have come to expect this. That’s life. Then everything changes. In one, single day. The moment you are diagnosed with cancer.

Suddenly you are hooked into a system of intersecting highways with a complex life of its own. Terminology. Technology. Treatments. Teams of people you do not know, and who do not know you. Unexpectedly, someone else is driving. You feel a loss of control as they hit the accelerator and you enter a world you know nothing about, where everything is completely new to you, yet everything is very personal, important and life – changing.

How do you prepare yourself for what’s ahead? You have no experience to call upon. You did not build this road. You’re not “behind the wheel.” You don’t know and can’t predict what is up ahead, or around the next corner. It seems that almost instantly everything in your life is foggy, complicated, stressful, exhausting.

In the midst of all this, you must make choices. Exits, entrances, new pathways fly by and you try your best to understand and choose the right road. You know decisions need to be made, but your vision is blurred by fatigue, fear, anxiety. You hear the words, but you struggle to process them. It’s so hard to focus, absorb, remember, decide. And even though you feel disoriented, the pace continues on.

Every so often a hairpin turn requires that the brakes be applied. Or you may even come to a screeching halt. New issues. New questions. More tests. Then more waiting. Tick. Tick. Tick. You would expect this temporary “slow down” to be easier. It’s not. Anxiety builds. Days feel like weeks while you wait for “the results”. They come back and then it is 0 to 60 again.

As you start getting accustomed to the people, place and pace, a new fear arises – the journey that is now just starting to feel familiar could change. You could be faced with a new obstacle, handed off to a totally new driver, put on a new path and have to start adapting, all over again. Often you think about opportunities, strategies, tools that could help you. But it seems too overwhelming — all you can think about is what is immediately in front of you, everything else zooms by. You wish there was someone with experience to help you navigate and regain your control and hope.

Thankfully, one day the road stops. You are a “survivor” and feel great relief, but find yourself asking: “Where am I? What do I do now? How do I get back to my family, friends and work? How do I restore my strength, my confidence, my life?”

Shark Tank Casting Call + Tips

Shark Tank casting calls are underway for Season 5. Visit the Shark Tank website for more info. Many people have asked me what I think are the main reasons I was selected to appear on Shark Tank - out of a pool of 70,000 applicants. Here are some tips that I believe contributed to my success for “standing out in the crowd”:

1. Regardless of how you are applying (in person or online), demonstrate your passion and personality. EMOTE. You need be authentic to you and your business, but you also need to stand out so whatever makes you and/or your business unique, capitalize on it. Own it and go for it.

2. Play up your product or service and how it’s unique. Consider your past pitches – what has landed you sales and/or press? Was it you, your product/service, or both? Likely both, right?! So, make sure you clearly articulate what it is you are selling. Pitch it and be proud about what you do. If you don’t feel excited, no one else will be.

3. Be clear with yourself as to why you are applying and customize your pitch to these objectives. Don’t be wishy/washy. Your message should be in alignment with your pitch.

10 Family Travel Tips

Spring is almost here and summer is right around the corner! This means increased family travel and fun with the kids.

Here are 10 family travel tips:

1. Pack light - this might not sound easy when we are used to overflowing diaper bags, but with the Babee Covee, a new baby blanket and cover that offers six uses in one, you can save a ton of space but have all you need for your little one.

2. Always have wipes - use them for everything…from cleaning the usual suspects of diapers and hands to the unexpected mess on you, on them or in the car. I don’t leave home without them.

3. Bring snacks – for the fussy child or the adult, it’s always better to have a snack to stay on track. Hungry people get cranky; snacks will help avoid this.

4. Have a box of “tricks” - before going on any trip whether by car or plane, I always head to the dollar store to grab a whole bunch of stuff. So, when necessary, I can give the kids something new and exciting. When you arrive at your destination pack the tricks away so on the return home the toys will still be exciting.

5. Layer up - you can never predict the weather so it’s always good to have a few layers to take you from morning until night. It’s much easier to take off than to not have enough. Being cold is not fun for anyone.

6. Charge up - when all else fails, hand your child your phone. Be sure to have a backup battery or charger. There are a ton of smart phone apps that kids can play with too depending on their age.

7. Use GPS - especially when traveling far, it’s best to know where you are going than to guess. Kids can’t wait to arrive so avoid lengthening the trip by not getting lost.

8. Bring a friend - the more the merrier so if you can plan a trip with others, do so. Then, you can create lasting family memories together.

9. Be comfortable – you’re traveling, not going on an interview!

10. Have fun! You are with your family, enjoy them! Life is too precious.

Eco-Friendly Ideas

We celebrate Earth Day April 22nd and what better time to consider eco-friendly parenting ideas? There are so many from which to choose so we consulted with The Bump for their expertise.

Checklist: Eco-Friendly Parenting

Going green? Good idea. Check out these easy ways to take care of baby and the environment.

[ ] Make your own baby food. (Wash your fruits and veggies, steam or boil, throw ‘em in the blender, hit puree, strain, and serve!) Not your scene? Try organic store-bought versions. You’ll find a ton of options from Gerber and Earth’s Best on the shelves, or hit the freezer section for a frozen baby meal from Plum Organics or the Brooklyn-based Happy Baby. (Frozen baby foods may have more nutrients intact.)

[ ] Use non-toxic cleaners, and take measures to avoid contact. Dilute your chosen suds (non-toxic or not), give all surfaces a clean-water rinse after scrubbing, wash sponges and cloths thoroughly, and allow the area a few hours of ventilation.

[ ] Try an earth-friendly sling made of organic cotton and hemp. (Crops of hemp enrich the soil and decrease run-off.)

[ ] Buy toys made from organic fibers, wood, or other natural materials. Can’t avoid the influx of plastics? Just be sure to donate them when baby’s done — many major hospitals accept used toys made of hard plastics.

[ ] As for the diaper: Cloth or disposable? It’s a tricky question, and some moms are even getting fed up and going diaper-free! (We aren’t so brave.) Check out gDiapers — this new company makes a biodegradable, flushable insert that fits inside a breathable liner.

It’s been a “swimmingly” good week following my appearances on Shark Tank and The Jeff Probst Show in a segment called “Why didn’t I think of that?!”. Psi Bands has received an overwhelming amount of support. As someone who suffered from morning sickness for more than a year of my life between my two pregnancies, and as someone who has been personally touched by the grief that cancer can cause, I remain steadfast in my passion to help others who suffer from nausea. The testimonials we receive from those who have been helped by Psi Bands energizes our whole team. These national platforms have increased brand awareness and consumer education. It’s with great appreciation and gratitude that I thank you for your continued belief in Psi Bands’ mission to help others who suffer from nausea.

I’d like to dedicate this month’s cancer blog to Romy Taormina, the founder of Psi Bands. She has integrity, works hard and is dedicated to helping people feel better. Anyone who’s suffered from chronic nausea knows how incredibly debilitating it is. Her revolutionary bands are “quelling the queasies” as she likes to say and giving those who are pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from motion sickness a chance to have a better quality of life.

Please understand that I don’t get paid to write these blogs. I do it because I believe in Romy and I believe in Psi Bands. My experience with the product was so positive that I felt inspired to share my story.

I used Psi Bands during my chemo treatments for breast cancer. The doc put me on five different anti-nausea medications for the first couple of rounds, but it wasn’t until round-three that I got smart and wrapped those bands around my wrists. I had noticeable relief. I wore them for the next 17 rounds of chemotherapy and believe they quelled the nausea and allowed me to eat and function throughout the day. I have been telling other cancer patients about them ever since.

I watched Romy so eloquently share her Psi Bands success story two weeks ago on the TV show, Shark Tank. She was poised, knowledgeable and articulate. Her presentation was impressive. Still, she received some negative feedback. One panelist said he was turned off when she claimed to help cancer patients. That reaction was surprising to me. Romy never claimed she was curing cancer… or helping patients beat the disease. She simply explained that her unique bands could help people handle the side-effects of chemotherapy. She was telling the truth.

Anyone who’s endured the rigors of cancer treatment will tell you it’s a long and hard road. If you find something to make that journey a little easier, try it.

Now that I’m a cancer survivor, I have a newfound respect for complementary therapies. I thank my lucky stars for innovative people like Romy Taormina, who will continue to put their energy toward helping people while growing a successful business. Keep up the good work Romy!

HOW TO PACK A CARRY-ON

With checked baggage fees running $25 at most airlines, it’s more important than ever to learn how to pack everything into a teeny tiny carry-on. If you’re up for the challenge, these tips can help:

1. Pick one basic color. Choosing clothes in the same color family (gray, brown, black) makes it easy to pack less so it all fits in one bag.

2. Accessorize. Add color accents to your basic wardrobe with scarves, jewelry, wraps and T-shirts, all of which are easy to pack and take up very little room in your bag.

3. Choose two pairs of shoes. One pair of dress shoes and one pair of casual comfortable shoes will be enough if you have packed clothes in the same color family. If it will encourage you to get some exercise while you’re on the road, we give you permission to also pack one pair of (lightweight) sneakers. Wrap each shoe in a bag before packing to keep shoe dirt off of your clothes.

4. Wear the heaviest, bulkiest stuff on the plane. It will keep you warm on the plane, save space in the suitcase, and be easily peeled off once you arrive if it’s much warmer at your destination.

Congratulations – you’re pregnant! But now you have a million questions and you don’t know where to start? Check out The Bump for all of the latest information. They have answers to literally, thousands of questions from pregnant moms. Here is a sample:

Question: Is it okay to drink caffeine while I’m pregnant?

Answer: The jury is out on whether caffeine can actually hurt your fetus, but most health-care professionals do recommend limiting intake. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it pulls fluids and calcium from both you and baby and will keep you running to the bathroom. (As if you aren’t peeing enough already.) Also, caffeine has no nutritional value and can affect your mood, sleep schedule and iron absorption.

Mompreneur Opportunities

After my recent television appearances I’ve been thinking a lot about my fellow entrepreneurs, and what great company I am keeping. There are so many talented and inventive people out there and many of the products created are born from some event that affects us personally or someone very close to us.

One such inspiring fellow mom-preneur is Betsy Johnson, founder and creator of SwimZip, the stylish UV 50+ swimwear for babies, toddlers, and children. Betsy was only 26 years old when she was diagnosed with skin cancer. This traumatic event served as a catalyst for Betsy to launch her own business.

SwimZip is swimwear which protects young children from harmful UV rays and makes stylish UPF protection you can wear anywhere. According to Betsy, she enjoyed working in the corporate world, but starting her own business while at the same time possibly saving lives, has become her “passion”. Her products have been featured on The Today Show and in People magazine, and she has been picked up by Target. What an inspirational story!

This is the type of account you’ll hear about at Tory Johnson’s Spark & Hustle events. I have been attending for the past few years and I can’t say enough good things about them. Tory created these events with the entrepreneur in mind and she finds that women attend for three main reasons: content, connections and cash.

EXCITING NEWS! “SHARK TANK” AND ”THE JEFF PROBST SHOW”

Hello friends and fans of Psi Bands! We are happy to share this exciting news…Last fall I was flown to Los Angeles to tape ABC’s national hit TV show “Shark Tank.” More than 10,000 online applications were submitted to Shark Tank for consideration and thousands of more people applied in person in various cities to appear on the show. There were multiple qualifying rounds and to make a long story short, I filmed in September and I have an air date of this Friday, March 1, 2013.

While I can not reveal any details about what transpired during the taping, I am excited about this huge exposure for Psi Bands, and the opportunity to bring my product to even more people who will benefit from nausea relief.

If you are a Psi Bands fan, I would love your support the night of the airing (or the days following the airing). A quick shout out on Facebook and/or Twitter (use #SharkTank) – particularly during the broadcast – 9 p.m. ET/PT – would be so appreciated!

And, in a pure coincidence of timing, just this past week I taped a segment for The Jeff Probst Show. WORDS FROM A CANCER SURVIVOR/THRIVER

I was chatting with my girlfriends about Valentine’s Day and what we were planning to do for our husbands, which led to another conversation about the most loving thing our husbands have ever done for us. One friend remembered being surprised at work with roses and a box of her favorite sea salt caramels. The other reminisced about a romantic, impromptu trip to Paris. My story was different.

My story is about the day I lost my hair from chemotherapy. The doctor told me most of her breast cancer patients lose their hair two weeks after their first dose of chemo. I remember thinking, “How toxic is that stuff if it can knock your hair out with one big punch.”

For the two weeks following my first round of chemo, I began to get more and more anxious. My sister and I went out to buy wigs and hats for that fateful day. I even had a bad dream about it…that all my hair fell out while standing in line at the grocery store. Talk about a nightmare.

So, on February 10, 2011, it started to happen. First I noticed dozens of strands on my pillowcase. I gently tugged at my hair and clumps would come out in my hand. I was trembling. I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want to startle the kids. I headed for the shower. Got in, put a dollop of shampoo in my hand and started to run my fingers through my hair. I couldn’t believe the huge clumps that were slithering down my head, over the sides of my shoulders and down my back and legs.

I remember feeling nauseated. What was happening to me? How could this be true? I had just had a bilateral mastectomy and was still bruised and scarred from surgery. Now this? As I stepped out of the shower and turned toward the bathroom mirror, all I could see was a tired, sad and frightened woman. I didn’t recognize myself. I rolled up in a ball on the bathroom floor and started to sob.

That’s when my husband Tom came rushing in. Without hesitation, he dropped to the floor, wrapped his arms around me and began to gently whisper in my ear, “Honey, you are beautiful. All I can see is your strength.” He said it over and over again. It was truly the most loving moment we have ever shared in 18 years of marriage. As he held me tight, I whispered back, “Thank you for saying exactly what I needed to hear.” Then Tom said, “Thank you for teaching me how.”

Now when I reflect on that experience, I know what true love feels like. Best gifts don’t necessarily come from trips or chocolates or flowers, they just come from the heart.

Telling Your Partner You’re Pregnant

“I had bought a shirt for our puppy that said ‘Big Brother’ and hid it until the day I found out we were expecting. My husband walked in from work, and as usual, puppy got to him first. My DH said ‘I see that you bought our puppy a new shirt,’ and then after a pause, he understood what it meant. It was a great moment.”

PLANNING THE PERFECT SKI VACATION

Whether you’re a veteran skier or fresh-faced bunny sloper, planning the family ski vacation is never effortless. Where to go? How to get there? What to pack? Ski school or not? Mittens or gloves?

These tips can help:

Access and activities matter. Slope-side accommodations mean less schlepping of gear and more time skiing. Non-ski activities (snow tubing, ice skating, face painting, or indoor play areas full of inflatable slides) will keep children entertained when they get tired of the slopes.

Make a list. Paying premium prices for

missing mittens isn’t very nice. Print out a packing list and use it.

Say yes to ski school. Even if you are an Olympic-caliber skier, leave this to the professionals. Most kids will learn better from someone else. And do your homework so you know that the school you picked is right for your family.

Stand out from the crowd. Get the kids ski clothing that doesn’t look like everyone else’s. It will make it so much easier to spot your child on the slopes.

Plan for altitude sickness. Drink lots of water, stop mid-way if possible (i.e. spend a night in Denver before heading up to the mountain) and plan to take it easy on the first day.

January is the time we plan for the new year ahead. We buy new calendars and planners in order to make goals and resolutions – both personal and professional. This same type of planning is important if you are trying to get pregnant or are expecting a new baby in 2013. You may want to check out the myriad “tools” featured in the online pregnancy authority, The Bump. Along with fertility, pregnancy, and parenting tools, The Bump also showcases new mobile Apps that can be downloaded to your Smart Phone. If you absolutely love The Bump, like we do, then check out their new mobile App for the iPhone, Baby Buzz by The Bump. Now you can be organized at home and while on the go.

TIPS FOR WARM WEATHER WINTER TRIPS

Heading to a beach can seem like an easy winter family holiday, but once you are out of summer mode, it’s easy to forget a few things. A little advance planning can help smooth the way.

1. Do a test fit. Make sure the bathing suit, water shoes and sandals from three months ago still fit your growing kids.

2. Plan to make your first stop at a pharmacy to stock up on sunscreen. If you don’t, plan to check bags so you can carry on more than 3 oz. of sunscreen. You won’t want sun-starved skin to spend more than a few minutes in the direct rays without sunscreen, lest you pay with a painful burn that can ruin the rest of your week (not to mention do long-term damage to your skin).

3. Do your homework. If you are visiting grandparents who live in a retirement area, check regulations on pool use, swim diapers, etc.

4. Rent, don’t carry. A host of companies rent everything a vacationing family needs, from cribs and high chairs to bicycles, guard rails, and plastic Little Tikes cars.

5. Bring warm stuff too. If you don’t want to do laundry on vacation, bring a clean cold weather outfit for the trip home.

6. Check weather reports. Just because you’re heading south doesn’t mean the weather will cooperate. You may need to pack sweaters in addition to swimsuits.

Like so many of us, Dr. Amy Baxter (who also happens to be a

fellow Huggies MomInspired Award Winner) took

a negative event and set out to find a better way. After her young son had a bad experience with getting shots, she used her medical expertise as a pediatrician and pain researcher to create Buzzy®, a bee-shaped palm sized device combining cold and vibration. When placed between the brain and the pain, the competing stimulus decreases shot, sting and burning pain. I just celebrated the New Year with my husband and kids in San Francisco where we had the pleasure of seeing the Broadway production of The Lion King. What a beautiful show! I had seen The Lion King in New York a decade ago and had always remembered the elaborate costumes, vibrant scenery and heart-stirring music. Yet, this time I was struck more by the powerful wisdom from young Simba to, “just be yourself.”

It was the same message I gleaned from my own story of battling breast cancer. I learned that life is precious and fleeting, so there is no time to waste being anything but myself. Truth is, it isn’t easy. The busier I get with the kids and family life, the more I tend to neglect myself which means I can’t really be myself. I become consumed with schedules, meals, laundry and homework. I’m not balancing my own needs with the needs of my family.

My friends share the same feelings and tell me that worry is the culprit that keeps them from being their most authentic selves. I get it. I worry about our financial future, raising our children, and whether the cancer will ever come back. When I am in this space, fear is in the driver’s seat. In this space, the fear edges out peace, joy, hope and faith. In this space, I can’t possibly be myself.

Sadly, I have spent many years putting myself last. I stopped doing the things that fed my soul. I was losing my sparkle. Strangely, it was cancer that helped me wake up to my true essence. It wasn’t until I was mourning the loss of my breasts, my hair, my health and my innocence that I started feeling tremendous love for myself in a way I have never felt before. Now, it’s up to me to sustain this self-compassion. The best way I know how to do that is to embrace life with gusto and do the things that truly make my heart happy.

For me that is walking along the ocean trail with my dogs, listening to beautiful music, and being fully connected to my family and friends. The more these things become a part of my weekly routine, the more I feel like myself. I’m also making a choice everyday to choose faith over fear… peace over anxiety. No more worries – Hakuna Matata.

Which ones made the top 10? Which ones didn’t make the grade? We’re guessing that as 2013 unfolds this subject will be discussed at length, especially as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, will be in the spotlight (along with Baby “Heir to the British Throne”).

Not everyone gets to travel out of town for the holidays. Some families host the holiday. If your house is the family holiday destination, these tips can help:

1. Get guests to pitch in. Ask visitors who are driving in for the day to bring a dish to share. Ask the ones who plan to stay awhile to pitch in with chores.

2. Plan a practice run. If having guests means the kids give up their rooms, consider reshuffling room assignments a couple of nights early. That way, the evicted youngsters-especially those 3 and under-can get used to sleeping on the floor or in one room with all of their siblings. They are more likely to sleep well (and, therefore, be far less crabby) when company arrives.

3. Give your guests what they need. Each guest should get two towels, an extra blanket and enough toiletries to get them through a weekend. Leave magazines on the nightstand for late-night reading and a flashlight for finding the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

4. Get out of the house. This is a sanity-saving requirement. It can be an after-dinner walk around the neighborhood, or a day-long excursion into town. Make a list of fun, affordable family activities, including story time at a bookstore or bowling.

5. Relax, enjoy and roll with the punches. Your holiday visitors won’t stick around forever. You’ll have your life back soon. In the meantime, relax and make some holiday memories. Be thankful you have space to share and let your kooky relatives enjoy it as well!

But few have brought me to tears like this recently posted review by the father of a 7-year old son with cancer:

“…there are skeptics out there but here is my experience: son diagnosed in July 2012 w cancer. started chemo July 21. through first couple cycles was having issues with nausea/stomach queasy no matter what blend of anti nausea meds we tried.ordered a half dozen different things to try including these bands…returning back from a chemo session and feeling nauseous as usual, the bands had arrived. I sat him down right in the garage – and quickly read the instructions and put the bands on him. we havent looked back. it’s absolutely made the difference for him, and not just for the feeling crummy part, but for maintaining weight. at 48lbs 49inches we couldn’t risk him losing weight during treatment because of nausea, or just feeling crappy. ONE TIME when he went for chemo (1 month ago) he decided he wasn’t going to use them (even though he had them with him) and we said ok. and an hour or two after he started getting sick. bands went back on and no issues since….”

This review alone will be enough to keep me going for the entirety of 2013. I hope no matter what your product or your idea that you continue to be gratified and inspired by what you are doing. And if you are even helping or bringing a simple joy to even one person, well, then you are doing a good thing!

As I move along my cancer journey, I continue to be amazed by the generosity of others. More and more I’m convinced that the supportive care I received from my family, friends, neighbors and the medical community had everything to do with my survival.

Right after my diagnosis, two of my friends sat me down and said, “How are we going to do this?” They showed me a website called lotsahelpinghands.com. Soon it became headquarters for Team Marilyn. My family and friends could log on and send messages of encouragement, sign up to make a meal, or fold my laundry or pick up the kids from school. It also became the filter I needed to prevent unannounced visits when the chemo had knocked me off my feet. I could read everyone’s love and support without expending too much energy socializing. I could store it all up for my recovery and healing.

Every other night for nearly 12 months, there was a hot meal on my porch. It brought tears to my eyes every time I’d see a friend, acquaintance or neighbor I had never even met… walking up to the house with enough lasagna to feed my whole family for a week. Every time I opened the front door I’d find flowers, books, holy water from France… rocks engraved with the words, hope, believe, strength, healing.

One friend, who is a firefighter, designed pink bracelets that said my name on one side and “strength in community” on the other. It was nice to be walking around town and see my friends holding their wrists up high in solidarity.

Since then, I’ve had a number of people come up to me and say that they were sorry they didn’t help me more and that they simply didn’t know what to do. I never noticed that because I was so focused on the support that was there before me.

But it brings up a good point. What do you do when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer? My answer is to just show up. Bring a meal. Make a call. Even if they’re saying no, I do believe on a soul level, they are saying yes. To honor one’s privacy, it might be best to reach out to the patient’s friend or family member first. You could still get your support across and do it with respect.

The support I received continues to lift me up… so much so, that I’m now working with my Oncologist and other survivors to start a non profit to provide supportive care to other cancer patients and their families. Everyone deserves to have that kind of help in the face of cancer.

GIVE YOUR ROAD TRIP A HOLIDAY FEEL!

Traveling with kids over the holidays doesn’t have to feel like just another family obligation. Instead, make the road trip to Grandma’s house an adventure with holiday flair. Here are five ways to transform the annual ritual into a family memory.

1) Name your trip. Weave in something relating to the holiday for which you are traveling, such as “Turkey Trot to Toledo.” Or “The Fisher Family’s November to Remember!”

2) See the journey with new eyes. Sure, you do the same road trip every holiday, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Challenge kids to look for new landmarks along the way, take the time to stop at that “roadside marker” you’ve passed every year and always wondered about, or stop to eat at the little roadside restaurant you’ve always wanted to try.

3) Get creative with games. There’s nothing like a rousing chorus of 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall or the license plate game to help pass the hours in the car. Give travel games a holiday feel by playing “Guess My Favorite Present,” “The Chanukah Memory Game” or “Quote that Holiday Movie.”

4) Be your own DJ. Ask each family member to put together a playlist of his or her top ten holiday tunes. During the road trip, everyone gets a turn presenting his or her own countdown. If the relatives like music too, consider burning the songs onto a CD for a personalized “Jones Family Holiday Collection” that makes a great gift.

5) Have fun with food. Plan a food-themed activity such as visiting a turkey farm to “Pardon a Bird” or a local orchard for a sleigh ride and hot apple cider.

With the cooler autumn air upon us, we instinctively reach for warmer clothes and comfort food. That doesn’t change just because you’re pregnant. Can you be expecting baby and be chic at the same time? Absolutely! With all of the stylish autumn fashion featured in magazines, the runway and donned on the city streets, there are many choices for moms-to-be. BEWARE A HURRICANE

The Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1 and runs through November 30, which puts October directly in the path of a (potential) storm. But a hurricane is no reason to abandon the idea of a fall getaway in the Caribbean.

You might even get a better deal by booking a trip during hurricane season. However, it pays to be smart about where you go, what you do and how you protect yourself.

Buy the Travel Insurance. Hurricane season is a gamble, but not every area of the hurricane zone gets hit every year. If the price and timing are right for you, book the trip, but spend a few bucks more to buy travel insurance and check the airline/hotel/tour operator policies on hurricanes.

Take a cruise. If you love to cruise and want a steal of a deal, book it during this season. The ship will reroute out of harm’s way. The only time a cruise is cancelled is when the hurricane is so severe that the ship cannot leave port. Beware, though, that if a hurricane is headed toward a planned port of call, the ship won’t stop.

Book non-hurricane travel now. The deals you can get now, during hurricane season, might still be good for travel long after hurricane season has ended. That’s because when people hear bad news about hurricanes, they are not apt to book a trip to the places that are in range of the storms, even if the trip is six months away. The closer we get to “high season” –Christmas to Easter — the more expensive that same trip will be. Grab the deals now, but wait to travel until the hurricane danger is long past.

Learning to Listen

A friend of mine asked me out to breakfast this morning and broke the news that she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I couldn’t hold back the tears as she was explaining that next week she’d be having a bilateral mastectomy. We both cried and held hands across the table while our coffee and cheddar biscuits turned cold. Her story brought up a lot of memories. She talked about making appointments with cancer surgeons, plastic surgeons and oncologists. It was all coming back to me, now.

Then, she talked about how her husband is devastated and scared, but completely there for her. She had her first big cry the other night. To her surprise, her husband didn’t put on his “mister fix-it hat.” Instead he just wrapped his arms around her and didn’t utter a word, not one word. She said, “That was a first, but somehow he knew to just hold me and listen.” My friend brings up something really important. When someone has just been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, they need time to digest the information, to accept their own emotions and to know it’s okay to feel scared.

After my own cancer diagnosis, I’d break down in my bathroom. I’d lock the door and turn on the water so no one could hear me sob. I was scared, but at the same time didn’t want to frighten my family. I promised my husband that I would do my best to stay positive and fight with everything I had, but that I would need a place to feel safe enough to fall apart once in awhile… and I wanted that place to be in his arms.

Letting my husband know what I needed up front helped provide a simple roadmap he could follow when he didn’t know what to say or do. It was simple… just be there. Just listen. I’m guilty of saying too much when someone is sharing a painful experience. I want to be helpful. I want to connect through my own stories. But as I’m moving through my own cancer journey, I’m learning that less is more. It’s time to put down my own “fix-it hat!” My job as wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend isn’t to fix… it’s to listen.

During breakfast this morning, I had many opportunities to practice. I stayed present and bit my tongue when it wasn’t appropriate to jump in to the conversation. I think that alone helped me to feel more compassionate and authentic with my friend… the way I need to be as I travel along with her on this difficult road ahead.

Traveling this Labor Day holiday? Car rental prices are often higher, since so many family trips are taken during heavy vacation periods. Here are 6 tips for saving money on your car rental.

1. Lock in a refundable rate as early as possible. Check prices again 1-2 weeks before your trip, and again the day before. Rental agencies run specials when demand is low. You can take advantage by rebooking at the special rate.

2. Check priceline.com; you might be able to snag an even better deal. Bid low; you can always bid again if your bid is rejected. Priceline rentals are non-refundable, so no more price checking after this!

3. Cut down on the number of days of the car rental. Take a cab or free shuttle to the hotel and rent a car your 2nd or 3rd day of vacation.

4. Bring your own GPS, toll pass and car seat so you don’t have to pay extra to rent these.

5. Ask if renting from a non-airport location will allow you to avoid extra airport rental fees.

6. Decline extra insurance. American Express covers insurance for car rentals, as do some car policies.

I can’t believe it. I’m doing it again. I’m neglecting my health, even after battling and beating breast cancer. This summer I’ve been staying up too late, eating too many fatty foods, avoiding workouts and not drinking enough water.

Six months ago, after finishing a grueling year of surgeries, chemo and radiation I made a serious promise to make my health a number one priority. And I meant it. I became vigilant about daily walks, weight training at the gym, maintaining a low sugar/low fat diet, and doing something new to challenge my brain and feed my soul. I started taking guitar lessons and learned that I might have actually discovered a new talent. I was on a roll.

But slowly, that precious time I carved out for myself started to disappear. To be more honest, I simply allowed it to slip away. I got back into the old habit of putting everyone else’s needs before my own. There was that back burner again. I know that I can’t truly help others until I help myself. Why is it so hard sometimes to make that adage stick?

Habits, good or bad help shape who we are. The key is controlling them. Even a small change can create big benefits.

Self Improvement Guru, Scott Young says only focus on changing one habit at a time. Trying to change more than a few at a time can be reckless. If you want to exercise more, set aside 30 minutes everyday. Make that one small shift and stick with it.

Next, you have to be consistent. Young says you have to repeat your new healthy habit everyday for 30 days. That’s how long it takes your brain to adapt.

Another tip: Write it down. Don’t leave commitments in your brain. Writing them on paper will keep your focus clear and will make it harder to dismiss when you see it printed in front of you.

Also, keep it simple. Your new habit should only involve one or two rules, not a dozen. Exercising once a day for at least thirty minutes is easier to follow than exercising Tuesday, Wednesdays and Fridays with yoga the first day and mountain biking the third day, except when it is raining in which case you wil do… yada yada yada. Simple rules create habits. Complex rules create headaches.

Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip into the old groove. Take a deep breath, bring your awareness back to your new goal of good health and get back on track as soon as possible.

The cancer journey is profound and powerful. I thought it was enough to shock me into a healthier lifestyle. Truth is, I have to make the choice… EVERYDAY. I have to do the work. I have to change my habits… one habit at a time.

When you hear the word “no,” then what?

I am a firm believer that when a buyer says “no,” it really means “not now.” I have been politely and professionally persistent over the last several years building the Psi Bands brand. I have received my share of “no’s” and I have not let that stop me from later landing major national accounts that previously said no.

So, what is the secret?

Timing + persistence = success

TIMING: There are numerous reasons why a buyer might have a need to fill a spot on their store shelf that they were not anticipating, including an under-performing product, a recalled product, or maybe it’s because your product just appeared on national TV and now they are willing to take a chance on your product. Other timing factors that could work to your benefit include: a new buyer coming on board (maybe the old one didn’t “get” your product, but the new one does), you have greater sales distribution so you can provide the buyer with key data points that are based on actual performance at other retailers, and/or you are now carrying a product line whereas before you only had one product (this is where the buyer is evaluating sku and vendor rationalization criteria). There are numerous reasons that a buyer could change his/her mind about adding your product to their assortment. As such, you need to keep at it and be persistent in your pursuit of landing the account.

PERSISTENCE: At Psi Bands, we compile a monthly report that includes all press/marketing for the past month and what we anticipate coming up in the coming months. I then, via email, present this to potential new retailers approximately 1x/quarter with the goal being that I remind them that I am here to stay and that I welcome their business. 1x/quarter is often enough yet not bothersome.
