EATING FOR TWO – HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?
The following tips come from our friends over at Bellybar, makers of wonderful snacks devised specifically for “before, during and after pregnancy nutrition.”
So, how many calories are the right amount to eat while you’re pregnant? The recommendations from the USDA state that 2,300-2,700 calories would be a normal requirement. But the experts at Bellybar suggest listening to your body first and foremost — trying to stay within your core foods. Then, after the core is satisfied, a little indulgence is fine.
For more on this topic and a printout of some sample meals and snacks specifically for pregnant women, please see Bellybar’s Nutrition page at http://nutrabella.com/nutrition/index.html.
HOW TO COMFORTABLY COVER THE BUMP
Ingrid and Isabel, one of our favorite maternity fashions companies and makers of the BellaBand, has recently introduced the Essentials Collection to give moms-to-be the short-list of go-to pieces to wear with every fashion, during and after pregnancy. Having created the BellaBand and the Essentials Collection, Ingrid & Isabel has some helpful hints to help mom as her belly grows.
1. Go ahead — loosen the waistband — Prolong the life of your pre-pregnancy jeans, pants, skirts and shorts by wearing them unbuttoned, with the BellaBand. This little accessory will cover, disguise and hold up your favorites until you’re ready to purchase maternity. Throughout pregnancy, your BellaBand works with maternity styles, holding them up whether they are too tight, too loose or falling down around the hips. And then there’s after pregnancy. It truly is the most versatile accessory you’ll own.
2. Layer your pieces to smooth it all out – Layering pieces give moms-to-be a smooth silhouette under pre-pregnancy and maternity pieces. Our Everyday Cami is a seamless knit camisole cut extra-long to fit over the belly and made to expand and recover during and after pregnancy. With its soft fibers and resistance to pilling, it can be used as often as you need it, for nine months and more.
3. Invest in a few items that support your growing belly – Our Belly Leggings are a luxurious, ultra-soft knit, designed with a changing belly in mind. Wear the waistband folded at the waistline in early pregnancy, up high and over your belly for full coverage as you grow, or folded around the lower hips for under-the-belly support in your last weeks of pregnancy. Super convenient for wearing under tunics, dresses and skirts when you want some support for the belly and style on the legs.
4. Show off that belly – There is no better time to show off a blossoming belly. Our Ruched Tank decorates your early belly with subtle pleating, a smoother, supportive silhouette on a blossomed belly, and heavy pleating after baby to disguise a recovering belly. Wear it under your clothes, with open tops and sweaters or by itself.
Enjoy your pregnancy! And above all, know that Yes, you look beautiful.
PAMPERING YOUR SKIN DURING PREGNANCY
During the nine months of pregnancy, a woman’s body experiences numerous changes – internally and externally. In addition to the ever-expanding tummy to lower back pain and morning sickness, many pregnant women also experience significant skin and body changes while pregnant. Specialty skincare line Belli understands that it is difficult for moms-to-be to find time to pamper themselves. But thanks to the Pregnancy Pampering Collection it is easy. This collection is made of Belli’s top pregnancy skincare products to help soothe the expecting mother’s mind and body.
“Pregnancy is a very exciting time but it can also be a worrisome time,” says Annette Rubin a mother and Founder of Belli, a skincare line that addresses the specific issues of pregnant women, new moms and babies. “As an expecting mother you now have someone else to be concerned about. Belli has created products to put expecting moms’ bodies and minds at ease. At Belli, we screen all of our ingredients to help guard against chemicals that are linked to birth defects.”

OUR PICKS FOR BEACH BAG ESSENTIALS
There’s no better place to be in July than at the beach. It is a place to renew your spirit, reflect on your place in the world, watch carefree kids frolic, ride the waves and lose yourself in that book you’ve been putting off for too long. But a well-packed beach bag can be the key to getting the most out of your visit. Though life does seem to move at a slower pace in the summer, let’s remember it will be over before you can say, “pass the sunscreen.”
Here are our picks for this summer’s beach bag “must-haves”:
The BOBO Wrap — A new eco-luxe accessory, BOBO can be used to create an eco-stylish beach bag for summer. An ingenious idea, the BOBO is a sophisticated, stylish and sustainable wrapping scarf that can be used in myriad ways. The really cool part is that BOBO fabrics are made using materials that come from previous manufacturing runs. Check out the Hobo Bag Kit for the beach.
Om Aroma Misting Toner Aromatonique — A refreshing organic toner that sweeps away impurities and prepares skin for maximum moisture retention and hydration. It may also be used as a finishing mist — a quick and soothing cool-down. Even better, the entire Om Aroma line of skin care products are free of parabens, formaldehyde, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrances.
IcyBag — The perfect way to keep your cosmetics, sunscreen, medicine, and snacks from melting or getting too hot. The fully insulated bags with built-in gel packs are as functional as they are fashionable.
The Molly Dendy “Annie” Sandal– Four fun designs from which to choose and just a touch of bling make these flip flops our footwear of choice.
Grapeseed Co.’s Surf Sea Salt Foot Scrub– Get your feet ready to splash in the surf and show off in sandals. A-list ingredients include: clay, citrus, and mint to clean and deodorize, plus vitamin rich kelp and pumice. This powerful blend helps to exfoliate, disinfect, clarify, nourish, and protect your tootsies. One whiff will take you to the beach!
Lastly, don’t forget your Psi Bands — stylish and waterproof anti-nausea wrist bands — perfect for boating, water sports, swimming in the waves, or even for the car ride there!
PSI BANDS CO-FOUNDERS ARE TRAILBLAZERS![]()
If you look closely at our beach bag list, you will notice something that all those products have in common. They were all created by women-entrepreneurs, just like Psi Bands co-founders, Carla Falcone and Romy Taormina. Last month, our chiefs of nausea relief were honored to have received the 8th Annual Trailblazer Award from Wells Fargo and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), at NAWBO’s 2009 Women’s Business Conference in Chicago. The Award recognizes innovation, growth and community service. Visit http://nawbo.org/content_6745.cfm for more information.
Launched in 2002, the NAWBO/Wells Fargo Trailblazer Award honors three women entrepreneurs for their talent, drive and entrepreneurial spirit. This year’s winners not only demonstrated those attributes, but also displayed successful development of unique product, services or delivery in their business as well as vision and commitment to building an organization that makes a difference in the community.

Road Trip Survival Tips from Cindy Richards, editor of Traveling Mom
Nothing says America like a good old fashioned road trip. But putting a kid or kids in the car for a long haul trip can add up to some pretty cranky kids — and parents. These tips can help ensure road trips are fun for kids and less stressful for parents.
1. Factor in plenty of off-road time. Fifteen minute stops every couple of hours won’t add that much time to the trip, but they could add immeasurable relief to kids who need to run or move or potty or just wiggle out of the car seat for a little while.
2. Choose snacks that stave off more than hunger. Choose healthy snack options rather than salty snacks that will drive thirst and the need for more potty stops. Freeze some grapes ahead of time. They will help keep the cooler cool and taste great while still frozen and even after they thaw. Bananas are another good, less messy choice.
3. Stick with water. Kids might prefer juice or milk, but water is good for them and less hazardous to your car seats. Stay green (and save money) by refilling bottles at rest stop water fountains.
4. Pack an overnight bag for everyone. This saves the hassle of unpacking and repacking the car at every stop. Put pajamas, toothbrushes and a change of clothes for the entire family into one bag. If you expect the hotel to have a pool, add the swim suits to the overnight bag.
5. Dress in layers. This will help if everyone in the family likes the car to be a different temperature. Those who like it cool can take off a layer or two while those who like it warm can add layers. And, when the inevitable spill happens, it’s easier to take off a layer than search for a fresh outfit in the mass of suitcases.

How Psi Bands Helps One Queasy Commuter
Here is an example of a testimonial we received recently. We think it says it all!
“Before I tried this MIRACLE PRODUCT, I suffered from severe motion sickness on planes, trains, boats, buses, and as a passenger in cars. I could never read while in motion or travel comfortably without getting doped up on Dramamine. When I recently had to get prescription reading glasses and they made me woozy, that was the last straw. I didn’t know what to do. I had tried other wrist bands for nausea, but they were hideously ugly and didn’t work. As luck would have it, I met the founders of Psi Bands at a women’s business conference last week – I bought the product and yesterday I put them on and, a miracle occurred… I could wear my reading glasses without getting nauseated! Then I tried looking at the names on my cell phone while driving… this is something I could never do even for 5 seconds without feeling sick. With Psi Bands, I could do it! Today I took the MUNI train downtown and for the first time in my life, I could read the newspaper on a moving train. I have been so liberated by this product! I wish I had found them years ago!”

Moms-to-be Need NOT be Nauseated this Mother’s Day![]()
Most people are familiar with the saying, "Necessity is the mother of invention." Did you know that in the case of Psi Bands, this expression is literally true? As the story goes, two girlfriends, Romy and Carla, were at Carla’s baby shower commiserating about the drab gray acupressure bands Carla had on. Yes, they helped stave off the constant nausea from her pregnancy, but that were absolutely ruining the look of her cute outfit. So, they conceived the idea for a more fashionable and more functional acupressure wrist band. Just two years later, Psi Bands were “born” — a brand new product devoted to helping mothers (and others) alleviate their nausea.
In honor of fashion-forward moms everywhere, consider giving Psi Bands to yourself or a loved one. Now through Mother’s Day, Psi Bands are offered at $2 off on drugstore.com. Or, see our most up-to-date list of store and online retailers.

Drug-Free Tips for Relieving Motion Sickness, Just in Time for Spring Break!
You’ve got the maps, the tunes, the road trip munchies and you’re all set for Spring Break. But even the most well planned getaway can quickly turn into a “get-me-out” for anyone who has ever suffered from motion sickness. Whether by car, boat, train or plane, an exciting vacation can quickly turn sour unless you are prepared for the nausea that often accompanies travel.
Motion sickness strikes when the body, the inner ear, and the eyes send conflicting signals to the brain. This often occurs when the body is subjected to accelerations of movement in different directions or under conditions where visual contact with the actual outside horizon is lost. About 90 percent of people suffer from motion sickness at some point in their lives. From 1/3 to 1/2 of airline passengers will experience some degree of motion sickness when encountering heavy turbulence, and almost 100% of boat passengers become motion sick in rough seas.
In addition to wearing your Psi Bands, there are other things you can do to ward off the queasies:
If you’re susceptible to motion sickness:
• Sit where there’s the least motion:
• in cars, drive or sit in the front passenger’s seat;
• on ships, reserve a cabin in the front or middle of the ship, or on the upper deck;
• by plane, ask for a seat over the wing; and
• by train, take a seat near the front and next to a window. Face forward.
• Focus on the horizon or on a distant, stationary object. Don’t read.
• Keep your head still, while resting against a seat back.
• Don’t smoke or sit near smokers.
• Avoid spicy and greasy foods and alcohol. Don’t overeat.
• Eat dry crackers or drink a carbonated beverage to help settle your stomach.
• Get fresh air. Crack a window, go on deck, open an air vent.
