Happy New Year to all of our friends, business associates and customers! We are so appreciative of your continued support and interest in Psi Bands. We are starting off 2012 with a new look and new content for our e-newsletter. As you no doubt are aware, nausea can be due to many causes — be it pregnancy, travel, or health issues. And people who use Psi Bands use them for different reasons. To address these varied interests, each month we will have interesting tips and facts in four areas: Pregnancy, Travel, Cancer/Wellness and Entrepreneurs. While many of you may be interested in more than one of these segments, we hope to provide some pertinent information to our entire readership. If you have any feedback, we’d love to hear from you at info@psibands.com.

WINTER ROADTRIP TIPS

Family road trips in winter require extra cautions. Follow these tips to ensure yours is a fun family travel adventure.

1. Learn what a winter weather advisory means–and heed the warning. Blizzard warnings are the worst, with snow and strong winds: you can get blinding snow, deep drifts, and a life-threatening wind chill. Winter storm warnings indicate a storm bringing four or more inches of snow/sleet in 12 hours; six or more inches in 24 hours. Winter storm watches are issued 12-36 hours in advance of major storms. Winter weather advisories are for conditions that may be hazardous, but should not become life threatening when using caution.

2. Let someone know your timetable and travel route. This is especially important if you are traveling in areas with little traffic.

3. Be prepared. Pack a shovel, broom, ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, flashlight, warning devices (flares), sand or kitty litter, high-calorie non-perishable food, and a spare, charged battery for your cell phone.

4. Keep your gas tank and wiper fluid reservoir full.

5. If you get stuck in the snow, stay in your car. It’s your best shelter.

CANCER/WELLNESS CORNER

Introducing “Marilyn the Thriver”

My name is Marilyn Byrne, and I can say with great pride and profound gratitude that I am a cancer survivor! No, scratch that. I am a cancer THRIVER! For the last 14 months I have put my body through hell in a fierce battle against stage II breast cancer. I have endured the rigors of treatment, accepted my own mortality and have come out on the other side, stronger and healthier than before.

I was diagnosed after finding a lump in my left breast. Talk about shock. I had just turned 40 and my kids were only seven and four. I knew in an instant the course of my life was changing and I was terrified. All the tests showed that my cancer had to be dealt with aggressively – that meant surgery, chemo and radiation. After numerous discussions with my doctors and long, arduous debates in my own head, I elected to undergo a bilateral mastectomy.

Surgery was a success. They did find cancerous lymph nodes, so Chemo was coming for sure. The treatments began six weeks after my surgery and lasted a grueling six months. My oncologist had me on five different anti-nausea medications – which helped keep my dinners down, but certainly didn’t stop the queasiness that would last a week after treatment. A friend of mine sent me some Psi Bands with the hope that I would find some relief. At this point I was ready for something that could help me get through the next infusion. I was starting to feel overwhelmed by the misery of chemotherapy. I was even beginning to have what’s called anticipatory nausea, which is a real, physiological response to the chemo drugs. Any time I would even think about driving to the Oncology Center, I would begin to feel sick.

So, I put the Psi Bands on — one on each wrist. Red and pink ones. I was heading into my fourth week of chemo and dreading it. To my relief, they worked! I didn’t have the same level of discomfort that I had experienced in the weeks before and I didn’t feel as sick to my stomach. I knew there was something powerful about those bands…and I’m only sorry I wasn’t wearing them from the beginning.

I am now six months post chemo and I feel good. My hair is growing in and my energy is coming back. If you or a loved one are going through treatment now, hang tough. You too will get through it, and begin to feel like your old self again, only a better, stronger version of yourself.

Are you trying to conceive? An ovulation test can help you identify the two days of your cycle when you’re most likely to get pregnant. Ever wonder how they work?

There are changes in your body right before an egg is released from the ovary (ovulation). Ovulation tests work by detecting one of these changes, specifically the increase of luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in urine. The LH surge, as it is commonly called, precedes ovulation by 24 to 36 hours. Detecting your LH surge with an ovulation test enables you to identify the most fertile time of your cycle – the two days beginning with your surge.

You can maximize your chances of becoming pregnant if you have intercourse within 24 to 36 hours after detecting your LH surge. Timing is one of the most important factors when you’re trying to get pregnant. When we started on this venture we were so excited about the prospect of improving people’s lives by introducing them to a simple product that makes them feel better. What we didn’t realize until we were knee deep in the business was that in the process of building Psi Bands, we were indoctrinated into an unofficial club of incredible entrepreneurs. I have learned so much from these relationships during this entrepreneurial journey, that now, in the words of Angela Jia Kim, founder of Savor the Success, it’s time to “give, give, get.”

I plan to share some of the tips and tricks I have learned along the way here in this newsletter each month. In addition, I invite you to read and subscribe to our new blog Both Sides of the Retail Table. Each week I, along with former Target buyer Vanessa Ting, reveal both sides of the story regarding what an entrepreneur of a product-based company needs to know to land a coveted spot on major retailers’ shelves. Many entrepreneurs just don’t know where to begin when approaching retailers and there are so many lessons to learn along the way. In the spirit of giving back, we simply desire to share the tips we have learned along our own paths.

As made clear by previous newsletters, we are all about supporting our fellow momprenuers. Valerie Lecouer, founder of Zoë b Organic, is one of those women who has taken the insight she has gained as a mom and applied it to a company that is making a positive impact for us all. Valerie is the inventor of the first ever biodegradable beach toys . To promote her new line, Valerie is leading a caravan down the West Coast with her husband, their 3 young children (ages 8, 7, and 3), another mom and her 6-year-old, a French nanny, and a 5-pound Yorkie Poo named “Rambo”. Over 3 weeks, they are driving a C-Class RV from Seattle to San Diego.

Their Mission?

1. To educate people about the need for minimizing our environmental impact on our beaches.
2. To promote alternatives to the plastic that’s slowly eating away at our planet.
3. To explore the coast, have fun, and not wear shoes very often.

The Zoë b Organic beach toys are made with bioplastic derived from corn sugar and contain absolutely no BPA, phthalates, or PVC. There are ways to be eco-aware even when you are away from home. Sometimes when we travel we tend to throw caution to the wind (“I can eat that. I’m on vacation!” or “Who cares if the kids are still up! We can all sleep in!”) And that’s fine…perhaps even healthy every once in a while. But, just because we are on vacation doesn’t mean we should get lazy about recycling. Check out Celebrate Green where blogger Lynn Cowell offers several tips for easy ways to stay green while traveling.

A Non-Invasive Cure for Morning Sickness

Oh, terrible morning (or all-day) sickness! It feels so awful. Why won’t your doctor give you something to help? One word: thalidomide. Ever since, only the ladies with the all-day, nine-month morning sickness get any relief. If you have your garden variety first-trimester sickness, girl, you’re on your own.

Or maybe not. Believe it or not, those acupressure bands (often sold for sea sickness) really do work, on a significant number of people. The bands have nodules on them that bear down on points on your wrist. No worries about hurting the baby, and most users find that their nausea is significantly reduced (worked for me when I was pregnant!).

But traditional acupressure bands are pretty darned ugly: knit bands that look like sweat socks, or like some type of hospital bandage that will make people ask you why you’re wearing them. Psi Bands, in contrast, look like watch bands. No one will notice. No one will ask you about them. You needn’t tell them that the reason you are ill is that every single thing in the world has a smell, and it’s all bad.

In May 1817, 194 years ago this month, Mary Shelly completed the writing of her Gothic horror masterpiece, Frankenstein. Shelly’s last book? A travelogue, which is interesting because she was known to suffer from motion sickness on boats and in carriages.

Actress Alexandra Wentworth, wife of George Stephanopoulos and the mother of two daughters, battled severe morning sickness while pregnant. One morning, Wentworth found herself down on all fours, about to vomit. She was joined by her miniature dachshund, who promptly threw up beside her.

Psi Bands made its major network television debut last week on The Rachael Ray Show. In a “Human Lab” segment on morning sickness, Psi Bands was highlighted as a remedy that one pregnant viewer tested out. We are thrilled that Psi Bands

has now been exposed to Rachael Ray’s 3 million viewers. We especially appreciated when Rachael’s on-air guest expert OB/Gyn (and author of Expecting 411) Dr. Michelle Hakakha confirmed that acupressure is a time tested (thousands of years old) method for relieving nausea. And then, to wrap it up, Rachael reminded the audience that Psi Bands are an Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine “Reader Rave,” announcing that we “know somebody who… not only loved Psi Bands but, wrote in and raved about it!”

“I have MAJOR motion sickness. I can’t even be a passenger in a car. If I’m going somewhere, I have to be the driver. I found out that my work wanted to send me to Shanghai, China (I’m from the midwest). I’ve never flown outside of the states, but that was the LEAST of …my worries. I was terrified of the sickness I’d experience on a 23 hour flight! I ordered my Psi Bands put them on immediately because a co-worker (who didn’t know how bad my motion sickness was) offered to drive. I was shocked that the 2 hour ride to the airport was comfortable and uneventful. Then when I had to board the parking shuttle to the airport, I was even more nervous. Sitting sideways in a bus filled with 30+ people?! Zero nausea! And even better the flight from the midwest to Japan and then Japan to Shanghai was spent eating, sleeping and reading in complete comfort! Thank you Psi Bands!!!

A woman’s chances of experiencing severe nausea during pregnancy appear to be influenced, at least in part, by genetics. Researchers found that women were more likely to experience a serious form of morning sickness if their mothers or sisters did. Looking specifically at a very severe form of nausea known as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), the authors found that women with sisters who had HG were 17 times more likely to also develop HG.

The Silver Lining Edition

suffering with morning sickness? here’s the silver lining, ladies

Though long been suspected, recently released research confirms that morning sickness early in pregnancy seems to indicate a stronger pregnancy, according to a Reuters article which quotes doctors at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where the study was conducted.

The study indicates that women plagued by morning sickness in early pregnancy are less likely to miscarry. But women who don’t experience nausea and vomiting during their first trimester shouldn’t be alarmed. “Not all pregnant women who go on to have successful pregnancies experience nausea and vomiting early on or at all,” said Dr. Ronna L. Chan, one of the study’s authors. “In addition, pregnancy sysmptoms can vary from one pregnancy to the next, even for the same woman.”

It is estimated that 50% to 90% of pregnant women experience morning sickness in the early stages of pregnancy.

Business owner and mom – can we have it all?

We asked Lorin Beller Blake, founder and CEO of Big Fish Nation and consultant to women-owned businesses, for her tips on how to achieve success as both a business owner and a mom. Here’s her valuable advice:

WHAT I’VE LEARNED:

In order to do both well (business owner and mother), I need to break the rules. I cannot do life and business like I used to. I created a non-traditional schedule that works for all of us. I need to be bolder in business than ever before in order to have a bigger impact in a shorter time. I need to fiercely cherish time with our family, which means multitasking is a thing of the past. My daughter deserves to be more than a task. Time is our only non-renewable, so we need to cherish moments and use them bodly and wisely.

SEVEN TIPS TO “HAVING IT ALL”:

1. Have a vision and do not let anyone take it from you.

2. Stay on the cutting edge of the 21st century with marketing and leadership styles. This is a must!

3. Break the rules when it comes to being present with your kids and your business…single mindedness rules!

4. Trust your gut! Always!

5. Love and business do go together. Be your genuine self.

6. Your success CAN change the economy. Actually, it is the only thing that will. Focus on your bottom line. GROW IT!

7. Go Big!! Whatever that means to you…Savor Big. Big Success. Love Big. Be your Big Best Self.

Jillian is a busy mom herself who wants others to feel her energy, excitement and happiness about getting healthy and staying healthy with your family! Jillian is a physical therapist, certified Pilates and yoga instructor, and a nationwide presenter and instructor.

Jillian’s Tips for Busy Moms (Families) to Live Happily Ever Active:

Bring balance into your life: You and your kids will listen better and improve focus and attention when you BALANCE – literally! Whether brushing your teeth, washing the dishes, playing catch, quizzing your kiddo on spelling – Try standing on one leg!
Learn “Sun Salutation A”: Google it! You do not have to be able to bend like a pretzel to practice yoga. In fact, a traditional sun salutation is not just for flexibility, but also warms the body, works the heart, burns calories, strengthens the core, tones the arms, lengthens the spine, focuses the mind and, well, makes for a happy day! And you can do 5 Sun Salutations in under 5 minutes! With your little ones practice counting out loud with each pose.
Commercial break for the core:
It’s OK – we know you watch TV, just don’t be a couch potato.
Commercials are a great time to tone the core. For one minute each,
practice these two Pilates moves: Roll Down — Sit with legs out
straight and slowly and smoothly roll down to your back one vertebrae at
a time then back up without lifting your legs or hunching the
shoulders. Teaser Hold – Sit in a “V’ shape with legs as straight as
you can (bend to modify) – then try to lift arms up to sky.
