TIPS FOR DRUG-FREE MORNING SICKNESS RELIEF

Many sources estimate that 80% of pregnant women experience the dreaded “morning sickness” –itself a misnomer, as anyone who has suffered through it can tell you that the nausea can last all day. At Psi Bands we believe strongly in the use of wrist acupressure to relieve nausea for the following reasons:Many sources estimate that 80% of pregnant women experience the dreaded “morning sickness” –itself a misnomer, as anyone who has suffered through it can tell you that the nausea can last all day. At Psi Bands we believe strongly in the use of wrist acupressure to relieve nausea for the following reasons:

  • Numerous scientific studies support the use of wrist acupressure to relieve nausea.
  • It’s easy to implement – simply place a Psi Band on each wrist.
  • It is drug-free so it won’t harm your fetus or interfere with other medications.

In addition to wrist acupressure to quell the queasies, following are some complementary drug-free tips we have come across:

  • Try ginger. It can be found as a powder in a capsule, grated fresh into hot water for tea, in syrup, or even as a sucking candy. (We’ve got a wonderful recipe for Hot Cider with Orange and Ginger listed below. It’s worth a try!)
  • Cold fluids and solids like ice chips, popsicles, frozen grapes, etc. may provide relief and help take away the metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Try not to eat too much at a time, but also avoid an empty stomach. Eat several small meals every day instead of large meals and try to incorporate protein into every meal.
  • For morning nausea, keep a small snack (like crackers) right next to your bed and eat a bit before rising. Allow a few minutes for the snack to digest, then get out of bed slowly.
  • Stay hydrated. Try a sports hydration drink, as well as water, broth, or juice.
  • Get lots of rest. Stress and fatigue can make morning sickness worse.

HEALING DIET DO’S AND DON’TS FROM THE HOLISTIC KITCHEN

We’ve all heard the expression, “You are what you eat.” There’s no question that our diet choices have a huge impact on our health. With that in mind, we asked Chef Nancy Banner, founder of The Holistic Kitchen for her expert tips on eating during cancer treatment, for healing or even to optimize your wellness. Nauseated or not, we can all benefit from her expertise! According to Chef Nancy –
Seek:

  • Eat as much plant based foods as possible, including protein

  • Eat a rainbow of colors from fresh fruits and vegetables everyday
  • Eat whole grain products
  • Eat foods that have a glycemic index of 55 or below
  • Eat foods that are easy to digest
  • Eat foods that have a high pH (>7) to balance the acidic waste that cells and toxins produce
  • Low fat options of any animal foods (fat is where the toxins are stored)
  • Plant sourced fats, such as olive and coconut oils (don’t worry that it is saturated fat – it has a natural cholesterol inhibitor in it)
  • Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids
  • Balanced ratio of Omega 6 EFA’s to Omega 3 EFA’s
  • Grass fed livestock and flax or coconut fed chickens
  • Natural personal care and cleaning alternatives

PSI BANDS IS GOING PINK

No doubt you are all aware, October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). In support of this effort, Psi Bands is going pink for the month. Check out our Facebook Fan page for more information on ways we can band together to support this cause. We’ll also be profiling great companies, products and services that support cancer-related causes.

SOMEONE YOU LOVE HAS CANCER – WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Unfortunately most of us have had someone we are close to diagnosed with cancer. As so often is the case in these situations we feel helpless, though we desperately want to help. Many of you have bought Psi Bands for a loved one who is going through chemo. This makes sense — it shows that you care and gives that person something that really can help them to feel better. We came across an excellent article in USA Today recently that addresses things you can say or do when someone you know is battling cancer. There are some really good points in the article and it is worth the read. A glimpse at some of the tips offered:

  • Be empathetic, but don’t be bossy about things they should try or do for treatment.
  • Even if the person can’t be as actively involved in your life, don’t forget them on important occasions like birthdays.
  • Don’t dwell on cancer talk all the time.
  • Offer specific help (i.e. can I come clean your house?).

NAUSEA, NOT! IT SAYS A LOT

From the very start, the Psi Bands mission has been to find ways to make a positive difference in people’s lives. That is why we are thrilled that Psi Bands is a part of the “Nausea, NOT” Carebox. Carebox was created as a thoughtful way to let friends and family know you care. Maybe someone you know is going through a difficult time, or maybe you just want to let them know you’re thinking of them. Either way, these creative and thoughtful care packages — from the “Nausea, NOT” to the “Lemons to Lemonade” to the “Hugs and Kisses” boxes will brighten their day, and maybe even help make things a little better. Carebox came about as a result of the founder losing both of her parents to cancer. She wanted to find a way to help people reach out when they didn’t really know what to say, much less do. She also made it her mission to work towards a world that’s free from cancer. That’s why a portion of the profits from each box goes towards organizations fighting cancer through research, education, and early detection.

Connect with Psi Bands on Facebook and watch for a chance to win the “Nausea, NOT” box (a $95 value) toward the end of the month.

OUR MISSION – TO GIVE RELIEF WHILE GIVING BACK

Since its inception, Psi Bands has sought to fulfill its mission of giving back. As such, Psi Bands has formed a charitable partnership with Fertile Hope, a LIVESTRONG initiative dedicated to providing reproductive information, support and hope to cancer patients and survivors whose medical treatments present the risk of infertility. Psi Bands donates $1 of every Cherry Blossom Psi Bands set sold to Fertile Hope. Psi Bands and Fertile Hope are working together toward a common goal – improving the lives of both cancer patients undergoing treatment as well as those whose parenting dreams are coming true. More information on how Psi Bands gives back to Fertile Hope can be found here: http://www.psibands.com/fertilehope.org

RESEARCH SHOWS: ACUPRESSURE WRIST BANDS EASE NAUSEA IN CANCER TREATMENT

Cancer patients who wore acupressure wristbands had much less nausea while receiving radiation treatment, making the bands a safe, low-cost addition to anti-nausea medication, according to a study in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management by University of Rochester Medical Center researchers. Previous research has suggested that the placebo effect might be why elastic wristbands reduce nausea. However, the findings of the latest study do not support that notion, even though researchers continue to believe in the mind’s powerful influence over symptoms. In fact, even when controlling for a placebo, there was a marked decrease in nausea felt by patients wearing acupressure wrist bands.

NEWS RELEASE CONTACT: Amy Herzog Public Relations Director amy@psibands.com/831.238.1849 September 8, 2009 Cancer Patients Combat Nausea with Style; Psi Bands Offer Fashionable, Functional Drug-Free Relief Pacific Grove, CA – When undergoing chemotherapy it can be even the smallest things – like wearing a stylish wrist band to ease your nausea vs. wearing something drab and medicinal – that can make a difference. That is why cancer patients and those who love them should know about Psi Bands — a product that not only gives the gift of relief to those undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, but also “gives back” by donating to an important cause. Psi Bands (pronounced “sigh bands”) are stylish acupressure wrist bands that are FDA-cleared for the relief of nausea caused by chemotherapy and anesthesia. Unlike similar products on the market, Psi Bands were designed with style and comfort in mind and come in five different designs (two of them unisex). Psi Bands donates $1 of every Cherry Blossom Psi Bands set sold to Fertile Hope, so they can continue to work together toward a common goal – improving the lives of both cancer patients undergoing treatment as well as those whose parenting dreams are coming true. Psi Bands provide a drug-free option that does not interfere with other medications, and as such, may be used as an adjunct to pharmacological antiemetics for control of chemotherapyrelated nausea. Psi Bands are worn on both wrists at the Nei-kuan acupressure point. Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses pressure to stimulate the body’s natural selfcurative abilities. Psi Bands are uniquely adjustable at two areas, around the wrist like a watch to fit various wrist sizes and at the acupressure point for personalized comfort. Psi Bands are also waterproof (no more soggy wrist bands), reusable, and affordable. In addition to relieving nausea due to chemotherapy, Psi Bands provide nausea relief due to pregnancy (morning sickness), motion sickness/travel, or anesthesia. “Mompreneurs” Carla Falcone and Romy Taormina invented Psi Bands after personally experiencing many months of morning sickness during each of their pregnancies. They found the existing products on the market to be dull and unsatisfying and were inspired to create something both functional and fashionable for others who suffer from nausea. -more- According to the American Cancer Society, there were 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed among women in 2007. Breast cancer accounts for more than 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed in U.S. women. Approximately 2.4 million women with a history of breast cancer were alive in January 2004. Surgery coupled with chemotherapy is one of the most widely used treatments of cancer, with nausea as one of the most common and dreaded side effects. Taormina stated, “My grandmother and great aunt are breast cancer survivors. We consider it an honor to be able to provide those who suffer from nausea with an effective, comfortable, and stylish choice. We want users to ‘Breathe a Psi of Relief’ when they are undergoing their chemotherapy treatments.” Psi Bands come two to a set, and retail for approximately $15/set. Psi Bands are available online and at numerous retail locations including Rite Aid stores nationwide. For a complete list of retailers and/or to learn more about Psi Bands, visit www.psibands.com. ### FOR MEDIA ONLY: High-resolution images, samples, and press kits are available upon request by contacting Amy Herzog at 831.238.1849 or amy@psibands.com.

EATING FOR TWO – HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

The following tips come from our friends over at Bellybar, makers of wonderful snacks devised specifically for “before, during and after pregnancy nutrition.”

So, how many calories are the right amount to eat while you’re pregnant?  The recommendations from the USDA state that 2,300-2,700 calories would be a normal requirement.  But the experts at Bellybar suggest listening to your body first and foremost — trying to stay within your core foods. Then, after the core is satisfied, a little indulgence is fine.

For more on this topic and a printout of some sample meals and snacks specifically for pregnant women, please see Bellybar’s Nutrition page at http://nutrabella.com/nutrition/index.html.

HOW TO COMFORTABLY COVER THE BUMP

Ingrid and Isabel, one of our favorite maternity fashions companies and makers of the BellaBand, has recently introduced the Essentials Collection to give moms-to-be the short-list of go-to pieces to wear with every fashion, during and after pregnancy.  Having created the BellaBand and the Essentials Collection, Ingrid & Isabel has some helpful hints to help mom as her belly grows.

1. Go ahead — loosen the waistband
— Prolong the life of your pre-pregnancy jeans, pants, skirts and shorts by wearing them unbuttoned, with the BellaBand.  This little accessory will cover, disguise and hold up your favorites until you’re ready to purchase maternity. Throughout pregnancy, your BellaBand works with maternity styles, holding them up whether they are too tight, too loose or falling down around the hips. And then there’s after pregnancy.  It truly is the most versatile accessory you’ll own.

2. Layer your pieces to smooth it all out – Layering pieces give moms-to-be a smooth silhouette under pre-pregnancy and maternity pieces. Our Everyday Cami is a seamless knit camisole cut extra-long to fit over the belly and made to expand and recover during and after pregnancy. With its soft fibers and resistance to pilling, it can be used as often as you need it, for nine months and more.

3. Invest in a few items that support your growing belly – Our Belly Leggings are a luxurious, ultra-soft knit, designed with a changing belly in mind. Wear the waistband folded at the waistline in early pregnancy, up high and over your belly for full coverage as you grow, or folded around the lower hips for under-the-belly support in your last weeks of pregnancy. Super convenient for wearing under tunics, dresses and skirts when you want some support for the belly and style on the legs.

4. Show off that belly – There is no better time to show off a blossoming belly.  Our Ruched Tank decorates your early belly with subtle pleating, a smoother, supportive silhouette on a blossomed belly, and heavy pleating after baby to disguise a recovering belly. Wear it under your clothes, with open tops and sweaters or by itself.

Enjoy your pregnancy! And above all, know that Yes, you look beautiful.

 PAMPERING YOUR SKIN DURING PREGNANCY

During the nine months of pregnancy, a woman’s body experiences numerous changes – internally and externally.  In addition to the ever-expanding tummy to lower back pain and morning sickness, many pregnant women also experience significant skin and body changes while pregnant.  Specialty skincare line Belli understands that it is difficult for moms-to-be to find time to pamper themselves. But thanks to the Pregnancy Pampering Collection it is easy.  This collection is made of Belli’s top pregnancy skincare products to help soothe the expecting mother’s mind and body.

“Pregnancy is a very exciting time but it can also be a worrisome time,” says Annette Rubin a mother and Founder of Belli, a skincare line that addresses the specific issues of pregnant women, new moms and babies.  “As an expecting mother you now have someone else to be concerned about.  Belli has created products to put expecting moms’ bodies and minds at ease.  At Belli, we screen all of our ingredients to help guard against chemicals that are linked to birth defects.”

Road Trip Survival Tips from Cindy Richards, editor of Traveling Mom

Nothing says America like a good old fashioned road trip. But putting a kid or kids in the car for a long haul trip can add up to some pretty cranky kids — and parents. These tips can help ensure road trips are fun for kids and less stressful for parents.

1. Factor in plenty of off-road time. Fifteen minute stops every couple of hours won’t add that much time to the trip, but they could add immeasurable relief to kids who need to run or move or potty or just wiggle out of the car seat for a little while.

2. Choose snacks that stave off more than hunger. Choose healthy snack options rather than salty snacks that will drive thirst and the need for more potty stops. Freeze some grapes ahead of time. They will help keep the cooler cool and taste great while still frozen and even after they thaw. Bananas are another good, less messy choice.

3. Stick with water. Kids might prefer juice or milk, but water is good for them and less hazardous to your car seats. Stay green (and save money) by refilling bottles at rest stop water fountains.

4. Pack an overnight bag for everyone. This saves the hassle of unpacking and repacking the car at every stop. Put pajamas, toothbrushes and a change of clothes for the entire family into one bag. If you expect the hotel to have a pool, add the swim suits to the overnight bag.

5. Dress in layers. This will help if everyone in the family likes the car to be a different temperature. Those who like it cool can take off a layer or two while those who like it warm can add layers. And, when the inevitable spill happens, it’s easier to take off a layer than search for a fresh outfit in the mass of suitcases.

Tucson Lifestyle names Psi Bands a “Great Find!”

Psi Bands is pleased to have been named “one of the hippest travel accessories” by Tucson Lifestyle magazine in the June issue, along with the latest iPod and a new travel bag from Le Sport Sac. Remember to pack your Psi Bands, or better yet, leave a set in the glove compartment. Don’t let your getaway turn into a get-out-of-my-way!

How Psi Bands Helps One Queasy Commuter

Here is an example of a testimonial we received recently. We think it says it all!

“Before I tried this MIRACLE PRODUCT, I suffered from severe motion sickness on planes, trains, boats, buses, and as a passenger in cars. I could never read while in motion or travel comfortably without getting doped up on Dramamine. When I recently had to get prescription reading glasses and they made me woozy, that was the last straw. I didn’t know what to do. I had tried other wrist bands for nausea, but they were hideously ugly and didn’t work. As luck would have it, I met the founders of Psi Bands at a women’s business conference last week – I bought the product and yesterday I put them on and, a miracle occurred… I could wear my reading glasses without getting nauseated! Then I tried looking at the names on my cell phone while driving… this is something I could never do even for 5 seconds without feeling sick. With Psi Bands, I could do it! Today I took the MUNI train downtown and for the first time in my life, I could read the newspaper on a moving train. I have been so liberated by this product! I wish I had found them years ago!”
